Employed on a yacht is an exciting career for energetic and resourceful individuals.
Life at sea can be testing so it’s imperative you enjoy being part of a team. On the flip side if you like to travel, often to exotic locations, enjoy the sun and don’t mind working when all around seem to be playing then a career onboard a yacht might be for you.
As captain you are responsible for the overall success, safety and operation of the yacht. Ultimately the responsibility lies with you. You will have proven navigation experience, and a valid licence for the size yacht you sail.
You will have experience in staff management and excellent communication skills, authoritive yet fair. Experience in budgeting, basic engineering, environmental regulations & emergency procedures would also be necessary.
An Engineer is responsible for the mechanical wellbeing of the yacht. He would be responsible for everything that happened mechanically onboard, such skills to include all mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. Be familiar with maintenance and necessary maintenance schedules required on boats, knowledge of motors, refrigeration and air conditioning & heating is also necessary. Remaining calm under pressure and problem solving would be required.
An energetic person with a good attitude and keen to learn would be the foundations for a deck hand. You would be responsible for the cleanliness of the yacht and all maintenance of the exterior including the underside.
Able to strip surfaces, paint, varnish & wax. Also some experience with maintaining and servicing water toys onboard would be an advantage. Experience in cleaning engines or having a mechanical background would also be very useful. Deckhands will be expected to assist in all aspects at a moment’s notice, and help with service when guests are onboard.
